Did "African American" History Really Happen in Atlanta, Cleveland, Philly, and Detroit? Listening to the Census.

By John McWhorter

The figures from the American Community Survey just in are more than crunched numbers. They suggest that this might be a good year for a certain term now familiar in American parlance to be, if not consigned to history, reassigned. Namely, as of now, almost 1 in 10 black people are foreign-born. About 1 in 30 are from Africa. Which means that they are--you see where I’m going--African American in the true sense. Certainly a truer sense--true as in making sense--than Tracy Morgan, Donna Brazile, Jesse Jackson, or Mo’Nique. Back in the day--1970, to be exact--there were only about 10,000 African-born people in the United States.

I kind of remember that: By that time I, even living in a populous Northeastern city, had met a single African. And it was a novelty--the accent, the clothes, what we would today call the sheer “diversity” of the man.

Last year the number of Africans here topped a million, and we could use that as a numerically convenient time to let go of the conceit we have gotten used to over the past twenty years, that black people born here are ethnically hyphenated people of half “African” ancestry. It just doesn’t go through. The black American does not look back on a childhood in the African “old country.” The black American speaks English natively, not Twi or Hausa (and in truth, it’s possible that not a single slave brought to the United States spoke Swahili). Barely a black American alive today knows anyone who ever even knew a slave born in Africa.

S.C. Lt. Gov.: Poor like 'stray animals'

South Carolina Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer has compared those on government assistance to “stray animals,” saying that the reason you stop feeding animals is that “they breed.”

Bauer is one of the leading Republican candidates for governor and gained national prominence after calling on Republican Gov. Mark Sanford to resign after his admission to an affair with an Argentine woman. But Bauer now finds himself in hot water for his remarks to a town hall meeting on Friday.

“My grandmother was not a highly educated woman, but she told me as a small child to quit feeding stray animals. You know why? Because they breed,” Bauer said during a speech advocating that the government take away assistance to those who do not pass drug tests.

“You’re facilitating the problem if you give an animal or a person ample food supply,” Bauer added, according to a report in the Greenville News. “They will reproduce, especially ones that don’t think too much further than that. And so what you’ve got to do is you've got to curtail that type of behavior. They don’t know any better.”

Bauer, who grew up in a working-class family, said parents whose children receive free, or subsidized, lunches at school should stop receiving government benefits if they do not attend parent-teacher conferences.

“You go to a school where there’s an active participation of parents, and guess what? They have the highest test scores,” Bauer said. “So what do you do? You say, ‘Look folks, if you receive goods or services from the government and you don't attend a parent-teacher conference, bam, you lose your benefits.’”

The comments have become the focus of the state’s heated gubernatorial campaign, dominating headlines in South Carolina’s political press.

Bauer did not respond to a request to comment, but has defended the remarks by saying the “stray animals” comparison was taken out of context.

Fired Officer: I Was Told I Was 'Too Black'
Glendale Heights (Ill), However, Has Gotten High Marks For Diversity

(CBS) Jammie Sheppard said discrimination is at the center of her firing by the Glendale Heights Police Department.
Was she really fired from a job because of her race? It may sound bad, but that's exactly what one suburban woman is claiming in a federal complaint.
She says she was kicked off the Glendale Heights Police Department recently with no explanation.

The Cook County Sheriff's Department says Jammie Sheppard served for 11 years and was not a problem officer.

So why did she start having problems when she tried out for the Glendale Heights Police Department? It's a question that may have to be answered in court. She says it's because she was told she was "too black."
"I had the sergeant address me, telling me I sounded urban over the radio," Sheppard said. "Basically he was just saying I sound black. And I was just like, 'I am black.'"

Sheppard says it happened when she was a probationary officer for the Glendale Heights Police Department, trying to work her way to an official position as an officer on the force. She says comments about the way she speaks were only the beginning.

"Everything was a problem," Sheppard said. "I could do nothing right."
Sheppard says she was regularly called into the commander's office. Just before she was to earn her certification, the department took her out of the picture.
"They didn't give me a reason," she said. "They just gave me a letter, told me I would not be working for the department anymore."
She admits she's made mistakes. She fell asleep once in a squad car and was suspended for a day. But Sheppard says a white officer sitting in a similar position had his incident laughed off.

"It was a joke in roll call the next day," she said. "There was no serious action taken … and I really thought that was unfair."

The chief of Glendale Heights police said issues with Sheppard's employment are private personnel matters. Attorneys say Sheppard will have a lot of work to do to prove her claims.

"You need people to verify your claim," Sean Murray said. "It's not enough that you simply make the allegation in and of itself. You need people, you need documents, you need evidence, however you can get it, to substantiate your case."
An independent assessment team that reviewed the Glendale Heights Police Department for accreditation says the force does an admirable job of hiring minorities. From 2005 to 2007, the department hired five sworn officers, two of them black.

OPINION: Pimpin’ Ain’t Easy (Unless You’re A Republican)
From News One for Black America

No one should be at all surprised that recently elected Massachusetts senate replacement Scott Brown awkwardly and embarrassingly offered his daughters Ayla and Arianna to the general public by making it clear that both young women were, as he put it, “available”. There has long been a strategy amongst the Republican leadership that involved getting their constituents all hot and bothered.

Who can forget Sarah Palin’s interminable winking during the Vice Presidential debate? A wink is a come-on. And if we had voted for Palin and her running mate John McCain, we were assured at least four more years of winks and innuendo.

It is impossible to imagine a group more sexually and morally repressed than far right wing Republicans. For these people, everything’s already evil, Independents and Democrats especially. So while the rest of us are free to enjoy our pornography and our masturbation glibly and indifferently, the Republicans must agonize over the torment that their natural impulses cause. There’s no easier way of controlling and manipulating a group like this than with the promise of sex. And the Republican Party shames Iceberg Slim by promising what they never intend to deliver.

I’m sorry Ms. Palin and I am for real, but you really don’t think we missed how you put your daughter Bristol out on ‘the stroll’ do you? When you found out that you were going to be a baby mama’s mama on what you thought was your way to the White House, you gave us Bristol as the flower of young womanhood, complete with ‘hunky’ soon-to-be husband Levi Johnston and presented them as the ideal for youthful Red State virility.
Now that it’s clear that you’re not headed to the White House, you’ve chucked Levi, you’re tossing us Bristol again and this time you’re giving us your daughter as both a new mother and a born again virgin!

It’s almost biblical!

Republican offspring also clearly suffer from some kind of white version of ‘Willie Lynch syndrome’ which proves that if you do something to someone long enough, eventually, they’ll start to do it to themselves.

Lord knows what compelled failed First Daughter Meghan McCain to show us what she was working with in a twitter photo.

I guess old habits are hard to break.

Fake GOP Pimp Who Made ACORN Tapes Arrested By The FBI

Alleging a plot to tamper with phones in Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu's office in the Hale Boggs Federal Building in downtown New Orleans, the FBI arrested four people Monday, including James O'Keefe, 25, a conservative filmmaker whose undercover videos at ACORN field offices severely damaged the advocacy group's credibility.

Also arrested were Joseph Basel, Stan Dai and Robert Flanagan, all 24. Flanagan is the son of William Flanagan, who is the acting U.S. attorney for the Western District of Louisiana. All four men were charged with entering federal property under false pretenses with the intent of committing a felony.

An official close to the investigation said one of the four was arrested with a listening device in a car blocks from the senator's offices. He spoke on condition of anonymity because that information was not included in official arresting documents.

According to the FBI affidavit, Flanagan and Basel entered the federal building at 500 Poydras Street on Monday about 11 a.m., dressed as telephone company employees, wearing jeans, fluorescent green vests, tool belts and hard hats. When they arrived at Landrieu's 10th-floor office, O'Keefe was already in the office and had told a staffer he was waiting for someone to arrive. When Flanagan and Basel entered the office, they told the staffer they were there to fix phone problems.

At that time, the staffer, referred to only as Witness 1 in the affidavit, observed O'Keefe positioning his cell phone in his hand to videotape the operation. O'Keefe later admitted to agents that he recorded the event. After being asked, the staffer gave Basel access to the main phone at the reception desk. The staffer told investigators that Basel manipulated the handset.

He also tried to call the main office phone using his cell phone, and said the main line wasn't working. Flanagan did the same. They then told the staffer they needed to perform repair work on the main phone system and asked where the telephone closet was located. The staffer showed the men to the main General Services Administration office on the 10th floor, and Flanagan and Basel went in. There, a GSA employee asked for the men's credentials. They said they left them in their vehicle
