Did not get to my reads until late so I’m way behind. I hope you folks have not already peeped much of this.

The Character of Unemployment - The American Spectator
By Ben Stein

A little while ago, I wrote a piece that appeared in The American Spectator with many observations about the recession. One was that among the people I knew who were unemployed, most had poor work habits or personalities that were difficult to work with. I said there were major and glaring exceptions to this observation but among my small circle, it was true.

A fellow named Aaron Crowe, who describes himself as an "...underemployed writer..." or something similar, apparently was disturbed by this suggestion. He wrote something angry about how offended he was that I would say that most of the unemployed had poor work habits or difficult personalities. He seemed to think that even though I had not said so, I was describing the mass of the unemployed in my essay. He was REALLY REALLY ANGRY about it. Somehow, he associated this in his mind with the idea that all Irish were drunks. (This kind of thinking could have something to do with his underemployment or maybe I am just mistaken here.)

Anyway, all kinds of blogs and leftist websites picked this up and ran with it, one even suggesting that somehow I was part of a GOP plot to deny unemployment benefits to the unemployed even though I am on record contra that position.

Take Note: Who Is–& ISN’T–Boycotting Arizona - Debbie Schlussel

As you may know, a number of showbiz “entertainers” are boycotting Arizona for enforcing the immigration laws the Obama administration refuses to enforce. But what you may not know is that a number of entertainment industry stars are NOT boycotting Arizona.

Top Ten Racist Incidents of the Week - Zombie

Obama’s “post-racial America” has not materialized. Instead, the nation has gone in the opposite direction and become race-obsessed America.

No, that’s not quite right either. We’re not obsessed with race — we’ve become obsessed with accusations of racism. Some of the accusations are true; some, not so much. But what used to be a last-ditch smear tactic used only by the most desperate political operatives, or something which as a society we’d try to ignore in the hopes that it would go away, has instead become a daily occurrence, a standard category in the 24-hour news cycle:
Politics • Sports • Business • Accusations of Racism • Weather

Just a few years ago, shortly before Obama appeared on the political landscape, I wrote this satirical dictionary definition of the word “racist”:

racist – A statement of surrender during an argument. When two people or disputants are engaged in an acrimonious debate, the side that first says “Racist!” has conceded defeat. Synonymous with saying “Resign” during a chess game, or “Uncle” during a schoolyard fight. Originally, the term was meant to indicate that one side was accusing the other of being racist, but once it was noticed that people only resorted to this tactic when all other arguments had been exhausted, it acquired its new meaning of “indicating one’s own concession of defeat.”
Oh, how times have changed, and how quickly.

Race Played Role in Obama Car Dealer Closures - American Spectator

The Obama administration, already under fire for unprecedented allegations of racial bias, faces a new bias claim from a most unlikely source: one of the administration's own inspectors general.

Decisions on which car dealerships to close as part of the auto industry bailout -- closures the Obama administration forced on General Motors and Chrysler -- were based in part on race and gender, according to a report by Troubled Asset Relief Program Special Inspector General Neal M. Barofsky.

[D]ealerships were retained because they were recently appointed, were key wholesale parts dealers, or were minority- or woman-owned dealerships. [Emphasis added.]

Mosque would honor U.S. values - Leonard Pitts

Leonard Pitts Jr.

They want to build a mosque two blocks from Ground Zero.

And the outrage burns like jet fuel, the argument billows like choking dust, the questions lacerate like flying glass: Is it right, is it decent, is it morally defensible, for developer Sharif el-Gamal of SoHo Properties to build a Muslim worship center called Cordoba House within walking distance of the place where Muslim men, acting from a perverse distortion of their religion, disintegrated thousands of lives — Muslim, Christian, Jewish, atheist and, we may presume, others?

Sally Regenhard, who lost her son in the Sept. 11 attacks, told The New York Times the idea was “sacrilege.” A man named Scott Wheeler produced an ad accusing Muslims of building the mosque to “celebrate” the murders. Sarah Palin called on moderate Muslims to “refudiate” — presumably she meant “repudiate” — the idea.

And then, there is Rabbi Yaakov Thompson. In an opinion piece for the South Florida Sun Sentinel, he accused Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, leader of the group that would worship at the new facility, of taking chutzpah “to a new level,” even though, he added, “I realize that those behind Cordoba House have no connection to terrorism.”

That bears repeating. Though he acknowledges the people behind Cordoba House are not terrorists, the rabbi still demands New York tell them no. In so doing, he blithely legitimizes the idea that tribe is destiny, that you and I are each individually answerable for the crimes of those who merely look like, talk like, or pray like, us.

That being the case, one wonders how far from Ground Zero the rabbi would think it proper for Muslims to build? A mile? Twenty? A hundred? Or maybe nowhere within the borders of these United States.
