Three Things About Islam

The Growing Detachment of the Political Class - Red State

I hate to keep harping on this topic, but it is so very relevant to the present political discussion. The political class and its sycophants — and I want to be clear here that this is bipartisan and, to a degree, across ideological lines — has grown hopelessly out of touch with the rest of America. The political class that supports things like the Ground Zero mosque has become fringe.
Muslims In Manhattan Need A Place To Pray - Sweetness & Light

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Muslims in lower Manhattan who have prayed in a crowded basement or in the streets say they are not looking for confrontation with opponents of a new mosque. They simply need the space.

Russell Simmons on CNN: Christians Bombed the WTC in 1993? - Newsbusters

Russell Simmons, founder of the hip-hop label Def Jam, bizarrely and inaccurately claimed during an interview on Wednesday's Larry King Live on CNN that perpetrators behind the first World Trade Center attack in 1993 were Christians: "If you're blaming Muslims for the attack on 9/11, then you need to change your mind. We didn't- did we blame Christians at the first World Trade attack?

Barney Frank calls Barack Obama dumb - Red State

(H/T Instapundit) Come, I will conceal nothing from you: I respect Barney Frank’s political skills.  I absolutely can’t stand what he uses those skills for, but I recognize that Rep. Frank has them, and that he knows how to use them effectively. To give just one example, Rep. Frank was about the only Democrat to make it through last year’s August health care meltdown without looking like either an abject coward, or a purblind fool*. You don’t have to like him - and I don’t - to recognize that.

Which is why Rep. Frank calling the Obama administration “dumb” for putting out an expectation of 8% unemployment if the stimulus passed is so interesting. First off, it’s a refreshing change from the previous narrative, which was that you were a dirty racist right-wing homophobe for taking the Romer-Bernstein graph seriously in the first place**.  True, it turns out that people were idiots for taking the stimulus as a job saver seriously, but that’s a different issue.Add this to the news that Rep. Frank now wants to abolish Fannie/Freddie (which, as Will Collier notes, is a bit of a switch) and one is forced to wonder: does he have access to polling data that apparently the rest of his party does not?  Or does Rep. Frank merely smell November on the breeze?

Jobless claims rise to highest level in 9 months - AP

WASHINGTON (AP) -- New applications for unemployment insurance reached the half-million mark last week for the first time since November, a sign that employers are likely cutting jobs again as the economy slows.

The Labor Department said Thursday that initial claims for jobless benefits rose by 12,000 last week to 500,000, the fourth increase in the past five weeks. Wall Street economists forecast that claims would drop.

California liberals want tolls on sidewalks - Washington Times

California officials can always be counted on to take bad ideas and push them to the extreme - especially when they can do so with your money. The board of directors that oversees San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge voted Friday to take $5 million in federal "congestion mitigation" road funds to design a gigantic suicide-prevention net that will run the length of the 1.7-mile landmark. To pay for the rest of the net's estimated $50 million cost, board members may impose a $1 toll on the sidewalks for crossing pedestrians and cyclists. (Automobiles already pay $6.)
