Obama slams GOP again on taxes, small business aid

Washington (CNN) -- President Barack Obama tore into GOP congressional leaders again Wednesday for trying to block his small business aid bill and opposing his plan to extend the Bush tax cuts only to those making under $250,000.

31 House Ds call for tax cuts -- for all

Washington (CNN) – Thirty-one House Democrats, most of whom face tough re-election bids this fall, have signed a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer urging them to extend expiring tax breaks for all income levels, including the wealthy.

Pelosi and other House Democratic leaders have made it clear they support President Obama's proposal to vote on a bill that only renews tax breaks for those making $250,000 and under. But with the midterm elections less than two months away, leaders have not yet decided whether they will schedule a vote on the legislation before voters go to the polls.

The letter–written by Utah Rep. Jim Matheson, Illinois Rep. Melissa Bean, Virginia Rep. Glenn Nye and Michigan Rep. Gary Peters–states that after listening to economists, small businesses and families over recent weeks they are concerned that "raising any taxes right now could negatively impact economic growth."

The Difference Between Thine and Mine - The American Spectator

The President's budget reform panel is being encouraged to sniff for smoke in the midst of flames. At its latest public meeting it was told that tax breaks are "backdoor spending." There is a two-fold problem in accepting such an equivalence. First, the nation's fiscal predicament is not any so-called "backdoor spending," but uncontrolled "front door" spending. Second, not only are the two not quantitatively comparable, they are not qualitatively so either.

The budget reform panel, officially named the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, is akin to a fire marshals' convention in a burning building. How hard could it be to follow the flames to an inferno? In the case of the federal budget, the government is spending a quarter of all America produces -- the highest peacetime level in U.S. history.

Americans urged to send in actual photos of stimulus signs

House Republicans are collecting photos from citizens showing how the Obama administration is using nearly $200 million in taxpayer money to plaster every possible highway with signs touting how stimulus cash is "Putting America to Work" with infrastructure projects.

Rep. Darrell Issa, the ranking Republican member on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, published a new video today inviting citizen watchdogs to send in photos of the green "Projects Funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act" popping up around the country.

Entitled "Signs of a Failed Stimulus: Be a Citizen Watchdog," the video seeks the investigative help of Americans "fed up with both President Obama's failed 'stimulus' programs and the taxpayer-funded propaganda signs used to promote this $862 billion boondoggle which has not fulfilled its job-creation promises."

13% of all American households pay neither federal income nor payroll taxes

From the Wall Street Journal:

Efforts to tame America’s ballooning budget deficit could soon confront a daunting reality: Nearly half of all Americans live in a household in which someone receives government benefits, more than at any time in history.

At the same time, the fraction of American households not paying federal income taxes has also grown—to an estimated 45% in 2010, from 39% five years ago, according to the Tax Policy Center, a nonpartisan research organization.

A little more than half don’t earn enough to be taxed; the rest take so many credits and deductions they don’t owe anything. Most still get hit with Medicare and Social Security payroll taxes, but 13% of all U.S. households pay neither federal income nor payroll taxes.

Obama Out of Step on Style and Substance

A misaligned presidency.

Many factors are contributing to President Obama’s decline in popularity since his historic election less than two years ago. A stagnant economy with stubbornly high unemployment certainly caused part of the downward trend. But there is more.

A White House out of step with many Americans on both public policy substance and style in office also explains a huge part of the dip.

Presidential control over the business cycle is limited. So Obama’s sour economy is partially caused by factors beyond his reach.

But only partially. Other variables are clearly within his grasp. For example, presidents make their own policy and stylistic choices – preferences that can, and indeed do, produce major economic and popularity consequences. Errors in this second area fall squarely on the White House’s shoulders.

President Barack H. Obama's Strong Leadership - Black Voice News

By Benjamin F. Chavis Jr., NNPA Columnist

Be careful on what you pray for, because God will answer your prayers. Millions of African Americans and others prayed for a President of the United States who would lead America in a more just and fair direction both domestically and internationally. Many believed two years ago that the world would never witness a Black man and woman in the White House.

Unless we are too quick to forget, prior to November 2008, the U.S. economy, world image, and national social divisions were all in pretty bad shape after eight years of failed leadership from President George W. Bush. Today as we approach the mid-term 2010 elections across the United States, it is very important for us not to lose our memory or sense of perspective.

This is also certainly not the time to become complacent or to take the importance of voting for granted.

Yes, the vast majority of African Americans are proud of the leadership and progress that has already been accomplished by President Barack H. Obama. Once again, the vital role of the Black Press reemerges on the national scene.

Most of the established media in the U.S. thrives off of cynicism and negative media coverage. We believe in objective reporting and constructive criticism. Yet, the problem is there appears to be more subjective criticism of President Obama than is warranted after only two years in office.

- News One

First Lady Michelle Obama and France’s first lady Carla Bruni met in Strasbourg, France in April 2009. What does Michelle Obama think about being First Lady? She calls it “hell.”

At least, that’s what Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, the first lady of France, claims.

The former model and wife of French President Nicholas Sarkozy makes the revelation in the new biography, “Carla and the Ambitious,” which she helped author, according to London’s Daily Mail.

Guess being 1st lady is too hard. Kind of like some people find it too hard to do other things that most (sane, rational, honest) people would love a chance to do - go to college, love someone forever, be happy??!!
