Professor Cornel West Wishes Obama Was More “MLK-Like” Welfare Money Being Spent At Casinos and Cruise Ships, ‘Everybody Draw Muhammad Day’ Creator, Freedom of Speech Disappear

Professor Cornel West Wishes Obama Was More “MLK-Like”

Professor Cornel West confesses that he’s having second thoughts about President Obama. In an interview with Playboy, he said he wished the president were more “Martin Luther King-like.”

West is also concerned about the lack of love and respect he sees between people, particularly where race is concerned.

“Love and trust and justice, concern for the poor, that’s being pushed to the margins, and you can see it,” West tells NPR’s Tony Cox.

The culprit? Greed, says West, manifest in the actions of players on Wall Street, “our televisual culture that’s obsessed with superficial spectacle” and the education system “where the market model becomes central.”

$69M in Calif. welfare money spent out of state

LOS ANGELES — LOS ANGELES (AP) - Nearly $69 million in welfare money meant to help California's neediest families has been spent or withdrawn in places like Hawaii, Las Vegas casinos and cruise ships from Miami.

The finding reported Monday in the Los Angeles Times is based on data compiled between January 2007 and May 2010 by the California Department of Social Services.

Data showed the biggest chunk of out-of-state money - $11.8 million - was spent at casinos or withdrawn from ATMs in Las Vegas.

The investigation showed out-of-state spending on state-issued aid cards was less than 1 percent of the $10.8 billion spent by welfare recipients during the three years.

State-issued aid cards were used at hotels, shops, restaurants, ATMs or other places in every state, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam, the data showed.

A single parent with two children must earn less than $14,436 to qualify for the cards, designed to help pay the rent and buy clothes for the kids, said Lizelda Lopez, a spokeswoman for the Department of Social Services.

In Hawaii, $387,908 was used or withdrawn at more than a thousand big-box stores, grocery stores, convenience shops and ATMs on all the major islands. At least $234,000 was accessed on Oahu, $70,626 on Maui, $39,883 on Hawaii and $22,170 on Kauai.

The list includes $12,433 spent at the upscale Ala Moana shopping center, $3,030 spent at a group of gift shops next to Jimmy Buffett's Beachcomber restaurant on Waikiki Beach and $2,146 withdrawn from ATMs on the island of Lanai, home to a pair of Four Seasons resorts and little else, the Times said.

‘Everybody Draw Muhammad Day’ Creator, Freedom of Speech Disappear - Big Hollywood

By Joseph C. Phillips

I am curious to see what happens when President Obama invites Molly Norris to the White House for a beer. Oh, wait… Molly Norris can’t go to the White House for beer because Molly Norris no longer exists; any trace of her has been wiped clean.

Norris, a Seattle cartoonist, was the unfortunate, creative mind who conceived of “Everybody Draw Muhammad Day.” Ironically, her satirical comment on the demise of free speech in America led to protests and death threats from fundamentalists Muslims, who apparently take cartooning very seriously. Anwar al-Awlaki, the American-born cleric who became an al-Qaida leader, then issued a fatwa. According to this man of God, the mere suggestion that people should draw Muhammad was cause for assassination. The FBI then suggested that Norris “go ghost,” which is to say, move from her home, change her name, stop drawing her cartoon—essentially wipe away any trace of her existence. Molly Norris is dead! So too, apparently is the American notion of freedom of speech as well as any vestige of American back-bone. Since when can those living in other parts of the world threaten American citizens with impunity?

Lefty - Can you please explain why you liberals leave so much trash lying around after your gatherings? I can appreciate a difference of political viewpoints - but the garbage thing is just about manners, plain and simple. Got decency???

I posted here your question from a few posts down as you would see my reply.

I know not of which gathering you wrote. Ignorance knows no political philospohy. Litterbugs come in all shapes and sizes.

Like that old 1960's Public Service Announcement, "Every litter bit hurts."

See Magic-y, we can agree on something. Now, lets hold hands and sing a chorus of "If I had a Hammer." You lead.

The gathering he was referring to was the "One Nation" socialist love fest last weekend.

The tea party cleans the grounds of wherever they gather.

Kind of odd, the people who supposedly hate the envirnoment leave the place spotless and the greenies can't be bothered to through something into a garbage can that is only a couple of feet away.

And yes, it did happen. I live locally and I took pictures.
